I usually check Google maps for taquerias to go to. Los Huaraches is around the corner from me but on busy Milwaukee Avenue on a stretch I don’t drive down often. And even if I did, I’d never notice it.
I walked in and there were pictures of the specials-plates-on the wall. It looked like too much food; I wasn't sure I wanted any of this. There were no single tacos pictured. But the man finished with a customer and asked if I wanted a folded paper menu. Good thing because the tacos and a large variety of other options were on the paper menu. I ordered a chicken tinga tostada and a picadillo taco. I like to dine in to get the full experience so I had a seat.
The waitress brought some warm chips and spicy salsa that were delightful. I only had 4 chips before my food came.
Now if you have been reading my blog, you know I like my food saucy, seasoned and spicy. I like it tasty. The chicken had the red color of a tomato-based chipotle sauce and when I bit into the tostada, my eyes rolled back in my head. That was SOME tinga! Time to examine: crispy tostada, smear of chunky refried beans, lots of tasty saucy chicken, fresh lettuce, sour cream, queso fresco as a crowning sprinkle. Perfection. I savored every bite. It was a little messy but worth it.
Then it was time to try the picadillo taco in soft corn tortillas. Picadillo is ground beef, diced potatoes and a little sauce. It is very much comfort food from your childhood if you are a half Mexican woman. Again, to die for. Rich taste and made just right.
Both items were very good. Often I order two items at a taqueria and one is standout and the other is just ok. The two items I had at Los Huaraches were phenomenal. I can’t wait to go back. I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing that it’s so close to my home.
3/18/23 Update: I took a friend for my 2nd visit. The restaurant was full and we were the only white people there. A Mexican woman who works in the kitchen where I work agreed that Los Huaraches is very good and she told me to try a huarache. It's a potato-based sope boat with a refried bean filling, fried and served with meat and cheese on top. I asked the waitress which kind of meat I should get. She suggested half steak and half chicken which was a great idea. Delightful.
